Kenya's ECitizen Revenue Collections Surpass KSh 900m Per Day, Julius Bitok

The eCitizen portal, an online access and payment platform for government services, has set a new milestone by collecting over KSh 900 million in a single day.

The impressive figure was disclosed by Julius Bitok, the principal secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Interior and National Administration State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services.

"The revenue collected by the government on the eCitizen portal on a single day has for the first time crossed the KSh 900 million mark," said the Ministry of Interior in a press release.

The PS reported that the most recent information from the online payment platform revealed a collection of KSh 903.6 million on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

Notably, a significant portion of this amount, approximately one-third, was generated from transactions in US dollars, totalling $1,446,495 (about KSh 224 million), while KSh 680.4 million was collected in the local currency.

Ruto's directive, new paybill number

The increase in revenue collections through e-citizen can be attributed to the directives by President William Ruto to all state agencies to include their services on the eCitizen platform before the end of 2024.

The president issued a directive stating that all payments for government services must be processed through a consolidated paybill number 222222.

The purpose of this initiative was to enhance the efficiency and accountability of revenue collection and prevent losses resulting from multiple collection points.

KRA shifts to a new paybill number

In other news on TUKO.co.ke, President William Ruto's Cabinet summoned 17 state agencies, including the Kenya Authority (KRA), over delays in migrating to the eCitizen payment model.

KRA responded by integrating the mobile money payment details for tax payments with the consolidated government paybill number.

"KRA notifies taxpayers that all tax payments via mobile money shall only be made through the Government Paybill Number 222222 with immediate effect in line with the Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022 and the Presidential Directive," said KRA in a public notice on Friday, November 17.
