Mombasa - An eight-month-old baby has been rescued after she fell into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni Ferry crossing channel under unclear circumstances.

In the harrowing incident that occurred on Sunday, December 3, rescuers from the Kenya Red Cross were captured on video diving into the Ocean to save the baby's life.

According to a statement by the Kenya Red Cross, the child is now safe at the Kenya Red Cross rescue centre after her life was saved.

"An 8-month-old child, miraculously saved after a distressing incident in the Indian Ocean, is now safe at the Kenya Red Cross rescue centre. Thanks to swift action and our heartfelt gratitude to the rescue team," its statement indicated.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the baby was thrown into the ocean by her mother.

TUM student drowns in Indian Ocean

In other news, a student from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) tragically died barely a week after reporting to the institution.

Fredrick Muriithi Lekena reportedly drowned while swimming with friends on the coast of the Indian Ocean in Nyali Beach.

The Technical University of Mombasa Student Association (TUMSA) secretary general Samomo Lameck disclosed that the engineering student died while receiving treatment after he was rescued.

Truck plunges into ocean

Elsewhere, two people were rescued after a truck plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni ferry channel.

In the incident, the truck was transporting cement from Mombasa island when it plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni Crossing Channel Mainland side.

The driver of the truck and his conductor were rescued by standby divers and the security personnel manning the ferry crossing channel.

Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata said the lorry was disembarking from the ferry when it lost its breaks. The driver, in turn, lost control and plunged into the ocean.
