Early reports indicate that survivors have been rushed to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital for advanced treatment.

Images from the scene have painted a grim image of the severity of the accident, with the matatu belonging to Ngata Sacco wholly destroyed.

According to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital's Deputy Medical Superintendent Emmanuel Sinei, 19 patients had been brought to the health facility.

What caused the accident

A report by Mtaa Wangu revealed that the truck might have had faulty brakes as it rushed downhill, frantically hooting at other vehicles on the road.

Mirriam Nyawira, a witness, said the matatu, on the other hand, had been flagged down by traffic police officers at the roundabout and had stopped on the side of the road.

She explained that it was likely the matatu driver did not hear the lorry hooting before it rammed into his vehicle.

"I think the matatu driver did not hear the hooting because he was talking to the police. Unfortunately, the trailer rammed over the matatu before stopping in a ditch on the side of the road," Nyawira said.

The police said that due to the impact, four male adult passengers on board the matatu and a juvenile aged about two years died on the spot.
