During the last week of November, stories of parents celebrating their children who had sat the KCPE exams made headlines after the Education CS announced the results.

Among the students whose KCPE results were announced by the Education CS was a student from Narok county who went viral for his news reporting skills and managed 404 marks in the exams.

TUKO.co.ke looks at this and other stories that made headlines during the week, including that of Equity Bank's chief executive director revealing her first salary as a fresh graduate was KSh 5,000.

Given her position at the giant bank, it is hard to imagine that she once struggled to budget for KSh 5,000, her salary at her first job in a law firm.

1. Man recalls losing lucrative job over rKSh 40 beer

Recovering alcoholic Chris Kim, aka Chris Recovery, has shared that he lost a well-paying job at Safaricom because of going to take KSh 40 beer.

In a TikTok video, Kim said he was due to sign in at work in the evening.

"I used to drink a lot, so that day, I had taken a walk and was very hungry; I was just telling God to help me get food as I had not eaten that day," he said.

"I met an ex-girlfriend, and she gave me KSh 100; I went and bought sukuma wiki, tomatoes, and dhania. I decided to go inside a local pub called Kwa Irungu and say hi to friends while taking a glass of beer. Each glass of beer cost KSh 25," explained the former Safaricom employee.

Chris narrated that when he stepped into the pub, people started buying alcohol for him, and before he knew it, it was already 3 am.

"A call centre manager had tried calling me. I had gone as far as where the brothel was to go and ask the ladies to sleep with me on credit.

I entered the house at 4am and sold my sofa to my neighbour in the morning," said Chris.

2. Kisumu twins show impressive performance in KCPE

A family in Kisumu County celebrated its twin daughters, who performed outstandingly in the just-released Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results.

Givens Neema Ochieng and Gayle Baraka Ochieng were students at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) Schools, Kisumu.

Givens was the school president, and she emerged as the top-performing pupil at the school with 417 marks.

Her sister Gayle, on the other hand, scored a stellar 401.

As soon as Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced the results, CITAM Schools took to Facebook and posted their best students.

Givens is tied to a schoolmate identified as Emmanuel Oliko. Only two candidates scored below 250 marks; the school had an average of 363.65.

3. Equity Bank's Executive Director says she first earned KSh 5k

Equity Bank Chief Executive Director Mary Wangari Wamae revealed that her first salary as a fresh graduate was just KSh 5,000.

Given her position at the giant bank, it is hard to imagine that she once struggled to budget for KSh 5,000, her salary at her first job in a law firm.

"I had two kids I was taking care of with that money," she told TUKO.co.ke of the salary she had in 1991 at the 3rd Abojani Economic Empowerment Conference.

During that time, the lady who once served as Equity's Director of Strategy, Legal Services and Company Secretary wore clothes sourced from the famous Gikomba Market and was never shy about taking public transport where people were made to stand holding a metal rod.

Wamae persevered for some time, and in 1995, she took the bold step of quitting employment to start her firm.

"I practised at my law firm for eight years," said Wamae, a Master’s degree in Leading Innovation and Change holder from York St. John University, UK, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi.

4. Narok pupil who went viral for news reporting skills scores 404 marks

Ian Lagat, the charismatic pupil who gained fame for his viral news reporting, once again became the talk of the town.

This time, it was not for his on-screen charisma but for his outstanding academic performance in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

Lagat, a resident of Nandi County, shot to internet stardom after a video of his confident news reporting went viral.

However, the teenager has proven he is more than just a media sensation by achieving an impressive 404 marks in the KCPE exams.

In a video announcement reminiscent of his famous reporting style, Ian humorously mimicked a journalist, declaring,

"Mimi sikuachwa nyuma bali niliweza kujitwika jukuma na kueza kuingia kati ya wale elfu nane, mia tano ishirini na tatu ambao waliweza kujizolea zaidi ya alama 400 baada ya kufanya jitihada za muchwa na kueza kupata alama mia nne na nne."

Expressing gratitude, Ian extended his thanks to the Ministry of Education for the prompt release of the results.

5. Jeridah Andayi celebrates daughter after KCPE results

Media personality Jeridah Andayi shared a video of her brilliant and bright daughter after the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam results were announced.

Norah Zawadi sat her primary national examinations, but her mother did not disclose her results.

The video looked like a throwback clip when Andayi visited her baby girl while still at school.

"This one! My own. Well done, ma’am President," Andayi captioned the heartwarming mother-daughter video.

In the sweet clip, her firstborn child, Norah, donned her school uniform and looked presentable.

They exchanged warm hugs as other kids watched from afar, returning to their respective classrooms.
