"I consulted teachers regarding my son's consistently poor performance, feeling deeply concerned. They advised me to give him more time and suggested that excessive play might contribute to his academic struggles.
When I was informed about my son being excessively playful, we implemented other measures to encourage his reading habits. I enrolled him in coaching sessions and took various steps to ensure his academic success," she told NTV Uganda.

Early signs of autism

Seeing her child struggle motivated her to become a teacher to help her son achieve his milestones and improve.

"Not every educator can handle such students. It would be best if you were patient when teaching slow learners. I handle students with care because I understand the challenges my son faced.
We discovered that the earlier signs, including slow learning, which my son displayed, were related to autism. However, the extra care and support he received from me and other compassionate individuals made a significant difference," the Uganda teacher said.

Becoming laboratory technician

She joyfully disclosed that her son became a laboratory technician because of her efforts and sacrifices for him.

Nambi called upon the government of Uganda to create more awareness of autism to educate society about the disease.

Man with autism releases gospel songs

Closer home, a Nairobi man turned autism into a gift as he beat the odds to become a drummer, singer and published author.

Glenn Mugasia struggled with autism since childhood, facing numerous challenges throughout his school years as teachers and classmates did not understand him.

As luck would have it, his profound passion for music, particularly drumming, gave him leverage to explore and cultivate his musical talent.

Glenn became an extraordinary drummer, released two gospel songs, and dreamed of having a band.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Glenn harboured a desire to venture into the printing business, expanding his horizons even further.
