Four years ago, Mama Tarkok Chelimo was going about her business at home when a huge cobra bit her leg and slithered away.

Chelimo fails to get quick help

Although there were frantic efforts to rush her to the hospital, TUKO.co.ke learnt that she didn't get the proper meds on time.

"Unfortunately, she lost her leg because she didn't get meds in time. She's struggling on the ground, can't walk, can't do anything," said Mwalimu Daniel Mutai who is trying to get her a wheelchair.

Sadly, Chelimo doesn't live with anyone else in her compound, and a wheelchair will come in handy; enabling her to move from one place to another.

What kind of cobras are in Kenya?

Kenyan is known to be the home of the Black-necked and the Red Spitting Cobras. They principally feed on rodents, birds, lizards, and eggs.

Unless provoked, they hardly attack. The exciting thing is that venom is extracted from the snakes for medical research and other applications.

The snake venom, on contact with the skin, can cause irritation, blisters and inflammation. It can cause blindness if the victim takes long to wash the eyes.

Snake trader dies after being bitten by Puff Adder

In April 2023, a man who used to capture snakes and sell them to traditional healers at KSh 5000 was killed by a Puff Adder.

On the day Abdalla Kalule from Bulawula B Village died, he saw a big snake going into an anthill and started digging out the place to capture it.

Monitor reports that when he tried pulling the snake by its head, it bit him, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital

Moments later, Kalule started feeling weak although he continued going about his other work until he became too weak and told me to take him to Nkokonjeru Health Center III. He was pronounced dead by medical workers after an hour,” explained his wife.
