Boni Khalwale Elated By Kakamega Airstrip's Benefits: "Sleep In Nairobi, Early Breakfast In Malinya"

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was over the moon on how the Kenya Airports Authority's Airstrip in the county's headquarters had made traveling convenient.

Kakamega airstrip revived

The Kakamega airstrip, which was commissioned in December 2022 after undergoing major renovations and facelift, has revived air travel to the heart of Western Kenya.

Khalwale, who shared a photo cruising on a Nairobi highway adjacent to the Nairobi Expressway on Friday, August 29, hinted that he was headed to the airport to catch a flight to his Kakamega home.

The legislator who is known for his penchant for bullfighting, said the facility that is set to be expanded further was among the best things that happened to Kenyans who commute between Nairobi and Kakamega.

Kakamega flights

He hailed the development and christened it as the epitome of the popular Luhya phrase bindu bichenjanga (things change), even referring to the airstrip as an airport.

"Good morning, tweeps. Thanks to the Kakamega Airport, we sleep in Nairobi and have early morning breakfast in Malinya. Bindu bichenjanga!" Khalwale posted on X.

According to Khalwale it was practical for one to sleep in Nairobi, rise up early in the morning and be able to be in their Kakamega village for breakfast with folks.

Shortly after the commissioning of the airstrip, Skyward Express Airlines announced that it would be doing daily flights to Kakamega.

The flights to Kakamega were then charged at KSh 6,000 for a one-way flight which ignited hilarious discussions online about the kind of luggage and snacks that would be sold to Kakamega passengers.

Skyward Express' maiden flight to Kakamega was flagged off by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua whom Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen accompanied.

Boda boda riders and taxi operators in the area, however, decried that Kenya Airports Authority management and security personnel were making it difficult for them to benefit from carrying passengers.
