In a heartwarming turn of events, Martha Munyanya from Bungoma has triumphed over cancer and is now cancer-free, bringing immense joy and relief to her and her family.
Cervical screening after giving birth reveals Martha has cancer
After going through a challenging and traumatic journey, she finally received the good news of her recovery on August 28, 2023.
Martha, who works as a storekeeper, shared her story with TUKO.co.ke, detailing the ordeal she faced while battling cervical cancer.

She had undergone postnatal care and opted for a coil as a family planning method. Before the procedure, she was advised to undergo cervical screening.
Unfortunately, the screening revealed the presence of cancer cells, shattering Martha's world.
"We began the process, and while on the coach, the nurse in charge asked me if I had experienced abnormal periods or funny discharge, which I told them NO, apart from the discharge that I was experiencing during pregnancy which to me I thought it was normal," said Martha.
The news of her diagnosis sent Martha into a state of shock, and she experienced depression and immense fear.
The toll of the disease affected her physically and emotionally, resulting in significant weight loss. The fear of the unknown and the waiting period for the HPV test results only added to her anxiety.
Martha takes charge of her health as share battles cancer
As she battled cancer, Martha decided to take charge of her health and consulted a nutritionist to improve her diet.
She incorporated various spices, vegetables, and plant-based proteins known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
However, the expenses incurred during her journey to recovery added to her financial burden.
Martha sought medical assistance from private facilities, including the Agha Khan and Eldoret Hospital.
The mounting expenses forced her to borrow money to cover the costs of treatments and dietary adjustments.
Despite the challenges, she continued her fight against cancer, determined to be there for her children.
Her emotional turmoil and stress affected her family life, leading to a strain on her relationship with her husband.
However, they both found strength in prayer and sought guidance and counselling from their parish priest.
Martha visits different hospitals for reassurance
In her pursuit of affordable medical care, Martha turned to the Kakamega Cancer Center, where she received support, guidance, and counselling.
The doctors at the centre handled her case with care and empathy, providing her with the necessary treatment and conducting the HPV test.
Finally, on August 28, 2023, Martha received the news she had been desperately waiting for - she was cancer-free.
"Nliliscream! Skuamini. I had faith. I told God through the novenas I was doing that I don't have cancer and I must live to take care of my children," said Martha.
Overwhelmed with joy, she expressed her gratitude to the medical professionals who supported her throughout her journey.
Martha's harrowing experience has inspired her to advocate for cervical cancer screening among other women.
She plans to reach out to mothers and encourage them to prioritize their health by going for regular screenings.
"I reminded God that if I heal from this monster, I'll reach out to mamas to help them go for screening than to wait for things to worsen," she added.
Her aim is to spread awareness and break the stigma surrounding cancer, empowering other women to seek medical care without fear or hesitation.
Doctors gave cancer patients one year to live
In a similar inspiring story, in 2005, doctors gave a cancer patient barely a year to live. He is still alive today, 18 years later.
The 30-year-old from Nashville, Tennessee, described how he was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour at 12 in his Reddit post.
Even with surgery and treatment, doctors at the time estimated he would "only live a year or two.", as reported by Daily Mail.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that the Make-A-Wish Foundation had even fulfilled his last request, which had seen his family flown to Hawaii for a vacation.
The cancer survivor, who is married and has two children, revealed he works in the hospital where he was diagnosed and treated as a child.
