Nairobi - The family of 54-year-old Teresiah Wanjiru, who was recently arrested for suspicion of being a notorious drug peddler from Ngara in Nairobi, has said she is not the suspect the police were looking for.

Wanjiru, whom the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified as the popular Mathe Wa Ngara allegedly selling narcotics in the locality, has been in police custody with two other young men.

However, speaking to NTV, Wanjiru's daughter said her mother is not the actual Mathe as, according to her, the real peddler is a woman known as Nancy Kigunzu, who has had several run-ins with the law in the past.

Wanjiru's son said his mother is a hotel worker while the real suspect, who should have been arrested in the operation, was at large, adding she has been a guest of the state before.

"The woman they were looking for has been arrested before," he said.

The family now hopes the real suspect is arrested so that their mother is released from custody.

Wanjiru's arrest

As reported, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Trans National Organised Crime Unit seized a substantial quantity of bhang and a staggering sum of KSh 13 million.

The successful operation resulted from meticulous intelligence work and a collaborative effort between the two units, showcasing the determination of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and organised crime.

The operation, which occurred in the sprawling slums of Kariua within Nairobi's Ngara neighbourhood, unfolded with precision, leading to the arrest of Wanjiru.

How did Kenyans react to Wanjiru's arrest?

Wanjiru's arrest sparked a frenzy online as Kenyans reacted to the police bust that recovered KSh 13.4 million in cash.

Kenyans hilariously likened the lady to the fictional main character in the popular crime series Queen of the South.

By Thursday, August 17, Kenyans were still talking about the lady, with some claiming on social media platforms that she used to be untouchable.

Another Kenyan event took his admiration for the lady by asking Expeditions Maasai Safaris, a touring company, to gift the lady a trip upon release.
