Nandi Governor Stephen Sang jokingly accused President William Ruto of taking sides with the Senate against the governors.

Devolution Conference in Eldoret

Speaking in Eldoret during the Devolution Conference on Wednesday, August 16, Sang hilariously narrated the circumstances that saw the Council of Governors (CoG) football team lose to the Senate's team.

The CoG and senators played a pre-devolution conference match on Tuesday, August 15, where the latter won 3-0.

Sang also defended his side, saying that senators had presented a very professional team for a simple friendly and fun match.

"Yesterday we had planned some pre-devolution activities. One of them was a football match between the Senate and the Council of Governors. As agreed and as a tradition, this is not always a serious match, it is a fun match."

Senators football team beats governors

"To confirm that this is a fan match we played 50 minutes and not 90 minutes. We had also agreed it is a fun match but our friends in the Senate unleashed a professional team on us and at the end of the game we were at 0:3," Sang said as the president broke into laughter.

The former senator serving his second term as Nandi governor said that Ruto's decision to engage with some county chiefs that were key players on and off the pitch played to the advantage of senators.

He particularly cited the absence of governors Paul Otuoma (Busia), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Cecily Mbarire (Embu) as detrimental to their desired performance.

"We think you may have conspired with the Senate because one of our dependable strikes Governor Paul Otuoma of Busia. You disappeared with him for the better of yesterday.

What has William Ruto said about fuel subsidies?

"We think that you may have colluded with them, including two very dependable members of our cheering squad, the very noisy Governor Susan Kihika of Nakuru and Cess of Embu county. We hope next time you will side with us so that we can redeem our image, nonetheless we have three days ahead of us, we will be able to redeem ourselves," Sang added.

Ruto delivered his keynote speech on Wednesday, August 16, reiterating that his administration would not embrace subsidies to make fuel affordable.
