Kimani Ichung'wah Scolds Azimio MPs For Contributing KSh 1.5m For Protest Victims: "Hiyo Ningetoa"

• The MP told President William Ruto at the event that it was an amount that he could raise by himself without contributions
• His sentiments came after Azimio launched a fund to support those injured or killed during the anti-government protests

Kilifi - Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah has criticised MPs allied to Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party for their contribution during the prayer service in honour of protest victims.

Ichung'wah scolds Azimio MPs

The Majority Leader called out the Azimio lawmakers for their contributions towards the kitty.

The lawmaker wondered how the more than 100 legislators allied to the opposition managed to contribute the amount he saw as little.

Ichung'wah told President William Ruto that the KSh 1.5 million contributed by Azimio MPs he would have contributed as an individual.

"I have seen that they have raised money. The former president donated KSh 1,000,000, our dear elder friend whom they call "baba" contributed KSh 1,000,000, and the members of parliament, I don't know, maybe KSh 1,500,000. The MPs, about a hundred and something, donated KSh 1,500,000 only. If it were me Mr President, I would have raised that amount alone." he said.

Ichung'wah says protests are meant to blackmail Ruto

The MP further stated that the demonstrations witnessed across the country in recent weeks were meant to arm-twist the head of state.

He claimed those behind the protests were trying to negotiate seats of power for themselves within the Kenya Kwanza administration.

"As we mourn Kenyans who lost their lives during the violent riots, because, your excellency, we said what we have witnessed in this country are not demonstrations, they are not is not picketing, they are not peaceful processions, they are riots organised and people being mobilised to riot so that people can use violence and anarchy to negotiate themselves into power," he said.

Azimio launch fund for protests victims

Earlier, the opposition outfit launched a fund on Friday, July 28, to cater for supporters injured or killed during the anti-government protests.

Retired president Uhuru Kenyatta was among the first people to make contributions to the fund.

Wiper Party leader and Azimio co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka announced that the former head of state had contributed KSh 1 million to the kitty.

Raila Odinga contributed to the kitty with the same amount as Uhuru, while Kalonzo gave KSh 500,000, with a host of lawmakers contributing a total of KSh 1.5 million.

"I also want to acknowledge the contribution of our brother Raila Odinga of KSh 1 million shillings, and I am escorting them with half a million shillings. Members of Parliament have already given one and a half million shillings,” said Kalonzo.
