Nairobi - A man battling bipolar disorder has discussed the side effects of the medicine for the mental illness.

Samuel Ochieng, diagnosed with bipolar one disorder over 20 years ago, said he had been on treatment.

Bipolar one disorder is defined by manic episodes that last for at least seven days (nearly every day for most of the day) or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate medical care, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

"I take medicine every night. Some effects are like weight gain, as you can see me. They also make you sleep a lot and increase your libido, making you hypersexual," he shared.

Hypersexual intensely focuses on sexual fantasies, urges or behaviours that can't be controlled and can cause distress and problems for your health, job, relationships or other parts of your life, as the Mayo Clinic notes.

Seeking night services in Majengo, Nairobi

The gospel artiste confessed to seeking the services of "women of the night" to cool off his insatiable heat.

"The medicines make you very high, making me engage in risky sexual behaviours. Sometimes I delved deeper, going to slums to enjoy cosy moments because they were affordable.
I remember going to Majengo. I knew all the corners where to find such affordable services," he laughed.

The Nairobi motivational speaker, however, did not say it was why he could not be married and stick to one partner but because the mild symptoms of his illness pushed people away.

Nairobi mum looking for son with bipolar disorder

Earlier this year, a Nairobi mum hoped to reunite with her son with bipolar disorder who went missing in December 2022.

She looked forward to embracing his teenage boy after he went missing from their home in Kariobangi South, Kwa Mbao area.

Pauline Nyokabi said her son, Clarence Gitangu left home after Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital's social workers at 3:30 pm had dropped him off.

She said her boy, who had bipolar and mood disorder, told his grandmother he was going to see his mum at the shop, but he never arrived, and he was never seen since then.
