A video of Mumias East MP Peter Salasya struggling to explain the meaning of climate change has left many Kenyans on social media in stitches.

Salasya, who was speaking on the sidelines of the Africa Climate Summit on Monday, September 4, fumbled as he tried to explain what the inaugural summit was all about.

What is Africa Climate Summit all about?

Speaking to SPM Buzz, an incoherent Salasya tried to back his seemingly superficial understanding of climate change by stating he recently went to Mombasa and found the city cold due to a supposed ice melting.

"As you are all aware, it is umh, climate change, right? Because you find that uuumh, mmh... climate change is real! Global warming. I think I was in Mombasa last week and it was so cold so I asked why and they told me that the the sun has melted the ice and so after it melts, it becomes cold.
"So global climate is real and whatever we will be told here, if they are going to implement, well, for the sake of the country," he said.

Peter Salasya's video amuse Kenyans

The cringe-worthy video has since gone viral and left many amused. Even more amusing was the man standing behind Salasya, who was struggling to contain his laughter.

Here are some of the comments from the video:

@TuJadili said:

"That's a university graduate. Egerton University to be specific!"

Anthony Njihia said:

"This guy just landed there for the show. Wake up early dress up and zero idea what your schedule is all about. Akin to walking in for an interview without a background check of what your potential employer does."

Colins Kones - Kipterter said:

"My man just went here to collect allowances."

Hope Gabrielle (Wangui) said:

"It’s how the interviewer managed to keep a straight face the whole time. I would have burst out laughing."

Salasya lashes out at critics

Following the trending video, the MP is now defending himself against critics who told him off over his lack of understanding of climate change.

The youthful lawmaker said those criticising him should try to vie for political office with their excellent mastery of English.

"All those criticising me on Twitter on how I responded on #spm about #climatechange. Let them go with their English and vie for office to become MPs in their constituencies. Politics ni local wakwende na kizungu yao. I was not elected to talk about climate change, muskie," Salasya said.
