Police Seize 7 Donkey Carcasses Destined For Nairobi Butcheries: "No Flesh Is Left To Waste"

Kiambu - Police have launched a manhunt for three men suspected of slaughtering seven donkeys in Kiahiti village in Gatune sub-location.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) stated that they found seven carcasses of the beast of burden skinned and ready for sale.

DCI stated that they got intelligence of the group's action and had set up a dragnet ready to act on the three individuals.

"Earlier, the officers based at Nachu police post had gathered intelligence on the impending slaughter and arrived at the scene on time as the unscrupulous meat vendors slaughtered the beasts of burden, whose meat finds its way to butcheries and meat joints in the city disguised as beef," read the statement.

The sleuths reported that the meat had been destined for butcheries and eateries in Nairobi and its environs.

What alerted DCI

The police reported that residents in Kiahiti had complained of their sleep being disrupted by the continuous sounds of donkeys in distress.

DCI stated that their reconnaissance revealed that after slaughtering the donkeys, the unethical traders extracted boneless meat and sold it to meat lovers in Nairobi at exorbitant prices as beef fillets or other boneless chops.

The investigative agency further alluded to the meat being sold to Kenyans in the streets as mutura, supu and matumbo, adding that no part of the animal goes to waste.

Natembeya says Nairobians feed on stolen meat

Elsewhere, Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya disclosed worrying details about the deep routes of banditry and cattle rustling in Kenya.

Natembeya claimed that Nakuru and Nairobi residents unknowingly fund banditry and cattle rustling because they eat meat from cows stolen from the restive areas.

"You go to Dagoretti slaughterhouse and try to look for the horns of those animals slaughtered there. You will not find any because people identify their animals using their horns. The good people of Nairobi eat these animals, you are funding bandits in the Rift Valley," Natembeya said.

He further said a bigger percentage of animals slaughtered at several abattoirs are stolen animals.

"70% ya nyama Nakuru na Nairobi ni ya ng'ombe za wizi ambazo zimetoka North Rift," he disclosed.
