Samson Cherargei Claims CS Ababu Namwamba Killing Kenyan Sports: "Officials Fly 1st Class With Girlfriends"

Nairobi - Nandi senator Samson Cherargei has said Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba needs to be held responsible for allegedly mismanaging the sports docket.

Cherargei said the flamboyant Sports CS needs to be summoned by the National Assembly to explain claims that the ministry was mishandling athletes.

Why Cherargei wants CS Namwamba summoned

The outspoken senator alleged that senior Sports ministry officials had travelled with "girlfriends" to the ongoing World Championship in Budapest at the expense of the nation's top sports representatives.

"Tonight I echo the sentiments of Kimani Ichung'wa, Majority Leader National assembly that CS Ababu continues to mismanage into oblivion our beloved sports. How can ministry officials fly first class with their girlfriends to the Olympics Budapest, Hungary at the expense of our athletes?" Cherargei posed.

Cherargei further alleged that top female athletes were being exploited sexually and economically.

"Our female athletes being exploited sexually & economically! Parliament must summon CS sports to avert disastrous mismanagement of our sports!" he added.

Kimani Ichung'wah warns CS Namwamba

In a related development, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah fired warning shots at CS Namwamba and other CSs who don't live up to their expectations.

On Thursday, August 17, Ichung'wah took to the floor of the House to apologise to Kenyan sportsmen and women for the inadequacies they experienced in their interactions with the sports ministry officials.

"Ababu Namwamba should tell Kenyans why he lacks the time to attend to the people who are representing our country and are good ambassadors of our country. Because this is his biggest responsibility," Ichung'wah said.

Ichung'wah further observed that MPs as the people's representatives and as such, must hold ministers to account.

"You were not appointed a minister in this country to fly flags in the streets and push other motorists as you bulldoze yourself through traffic with Subaru escorts. You were made a minister to serve the people. And if you were made the minister of Sports you must serve the sportsmen and women of our country," Ichung'wah added.
