Police who were deployed to the school allegedly started shooting in the air and lobbed tear-gas canisters to disperse the rioting students.

The presence of police degenerated into a running battle as some students jumped over the fence to seek refuge at the nearby homesteads.

"The students said the school administration was being extra strict. Students jumped the school fence and ran towards the river after police were called to the scene. The police allegedly fired what is yet to be established if was a bullet or a teargas canister," a parent said.

On Tuesday, July 25, the body of one of the students was found by residents near River Maara, a kilometre from the school.

Residents said the body had visible physical injuries on the face, but it was not immediately established what could have caused his death.

Geoffrey Gitonga Kiragu, a guardian at the school where his grandson is a student, blamed the school administration for failing to inform the parents on time.

"I was just called by another parent who has a child at the school. I went and picked up my grandchild and we were told to take them back to school by the administration that is when we got the news that one boy had died. The administration should have amicably resolved the differences," Kiragu stated.
