Vihiga: Suspects In Brutal Murder Of 76-Year-Old Granny Arrested, Stolen Phone Recovered

Vihiga - Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested two suspects linked to the murder of a 76-year-old woman in Vihiga county.

In a statement, DCI said Patrick Misiko, aged 36, and Christine Jerono, aged 46, were arrested in the Majengo area after a month-long search.

The two robbery with violence suspects are believed to have been part of a gang that robbed, gang-raped and then killed a 76-year-old woman a month ago in Serem area of Vihiga County.

DCI disclosed that a mobile phone of the make Oking OK 237 belonging to the deceased was recovered during the arrest.

"The suspects, Patrick Misiko,36 and Christine Jerono, 46 were arrested in the county's Majengo area, while in possession of the deceased's mobile phone make Oking OK 237 that formed part of the items robbed from her during the July 18 robbery," the statement read.

Detectives said the search for other accomplices in the case has been heightened even as the interrogation of the arrested suspects continues.

"As interrogation of the two suspects continue, search for their accomplices has been heightened with the local police maintaining a sharp lookout," DCI added.

DCI: How Vihiga gang killed 76-year-old woman

According to DCI, on July 18, the gang broke into the elderly woman's house at night and attacked her using blunt objects after committing an ungodly act on her.

During the attack, the earned gang allegedly stole several items, including a gas cylinder, phone and solar cable.

The elderly woman was rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital for treatment but succumbed two days later.

"On the fateful night, the killer gang had broken into the house of the elderly woman in the dead of the night, descending on her with blunt objects and committing the abominable act. It had then made away with her gas cylinder, a solar cable, phone and shopping, leaving her writhing in agonizing pain as she slid into her untimely death," the statement added.

Suspect in shooting of David Mayaka arrested

Elsewhere, Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau Officers arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of being part of a gang that killed a detective in Nairobi's Makadara area.

Detectives said Alex Wanjiru was flushed out of his hideout in Ruthingiti area in Kiambu county.

DCI further disclosed that Wanjiru fled Kayole after the shooting of detective David Mayaka and sought refuge at his grandmother's house in Kiambu.

"Alex Wanjiru, 23, who was part of the miscreant gang involved in the cold-blooded murder of our colleague detective David Mayaka, had escaped from Kayole immediately after the incident and sought refuge at his grandmother’s home in Ruthingiti, Kikuyu sub-county, before detectives tracked him down," DCI said in a statement.
