Nairobi - Retired Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Abdi Guliye has opened up about the fracas that unfolded at the Bomas of Kenya after former chairman Wafula Chebukati arrived to announce the 2022 presidential results.

Speaking to TV47 on the evening of Monday, July 31, Guliye revealed that he, alongside Chebukati and Marjan Hussein Marjan (former IEBC CEO), went into hiding.

"We went into hiding after we announced the election results. Do you remember what happened at the podium? I was the most injured during that commotion which some of them call themselves honourable but they included governors, senators, and MPs who were subjecting us to that humiliation," said Guliye.

"I was bleeding from both legs as a result of that fracas. And so, we felt threatened. That is why the chairman came in alone because I was injured in both legs. I even have the scars of that election," he added.

Guliye further revealed that Marjan was also injured after being hit with a blunt object at the back of his head.

"So he (Marjan) had a swollen head at the back and so from all these scenarios we didn't know what was in store for us and so we felt threatened and we had to go and hide somewhere and see how things are moving," he explained.

IEBC commissioners' families ridiculed

He also said that their families were being ridiculed as a result of their actions.

"I remember my family being isolated by our colleagues but they were strong people. I told them that it is part of my job and it was not going to be that way forever," Guliye further said.

Need for Kenyan competitive elections

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Guliye opposed the planned talks between President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

During the interview with TV47 on Monday, July 31, Guliye questioned the need for competitive elections in the country.

He observed that the commission used a lot of resources to oversee the process, and it would be a mockery of the process for the players to denounce the outcome.
