Chavakali High Teacher Explains Why He Switched Off Phone, Failed To Call KarehB After Son's Death

Chavakali High School teacher has opened up on the reason he did not relay news of Joseph "Joe" Mwadulo's death to the bereaved family.

Mwadulo, KarehB's teenage son, was the only fatality in an accident involving an Easy Coach bus in Kisumu on Monday evening, April 1.

The teenager was heading home for the April holidays when the driver lost control when negotiating the roundabout, hit the guardrails, and fell off the edge.

While giving his tribute at Mwadulo's burial in Embu, class teacher, Steven, said he talked to a few parents on their class WhatsApp group before sleeping.

"I went to relax after a long day, but before I slept, I chatted with parents on our class wall until around 10pm. My phone ran out of battery, so I left it in the living room.

On Tuesday, I woke up at 6am and found several missed calls. I returned a few calls, and one parent told me sorry for what had happened. I did not understand. When I opened my WhatsApp chats, a grandma informed me that a boy from our class had perished," he said.

Steven noted KarehB called him around 7am asking about her handsome son who had not arrived home.

The class teacher asked her to give him a few minutes as he rushed to school to confirm what was happening.

"When I went to school and confirmed what had happened, I couldn't get back to mama Joe immediately. I went back to the house and broke down. I just wanted to be alone. That's what happened, and that is why we are here," he said.
