How Cyclone Ialy killed pupil in Kilifi

Five pupils from Gogoraruhe Mosque ECDE School, sustained serious injuries after a flying iron sheet hit them amid strong winds caused by Cyclone Ialy.

The children were rushed to Mariakani Sub-county Hospital for treatment, where the four-year-old girl tragically succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

The other four pupils sustained head and limb injuries and are still receiving treatment.

Speaking after the tragedy, Governor Gideon Mung'aro said the school's parking lot, vehicles, and classrooms were damaged.

He further emphasised the severity of the strong winds, saying that they pulled down trees and electric posts and left many displaced.

What is Kilifi county doing to stop further damages?

Following the tragedy, the county boss ordered all ECDE schools in Kilifi to be closed for a week.

"From Wednesday, all ECDE schools in the county should be closed. Also, students shouldn't be allowed near any school premises. Don't allow your children to play near houses made of iron sheets," he said.

He further warned people against going to the Indian Ocean till the strong winds have subsided.

Cyclone Ialy hits the coast

As earlier reported, extremely strong winds have been reported in various coastal areas of Kenya as a result of Cyclone Ialy

Several houses along the Kenyan coast were destroyed and an unknown number of people displaced on Tuesday, May 21, after the said cyclone hit the region.

According to a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, the Kenya Red Cross said strong winds blew the roofs of residential houses in the Majajani area of Kilifi County.

The organization asked people in the coastal region to take necessary precautions to avoid becoming victims of the strong winds.
