A student at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology expressed delight upon receiving his portion of a donation from President William Ruto to the student body.

During his visit to the institution, Ruto presented the school with KSh 1 million, requesting the management to ensure it reached the students directly.

Days later, the university issued a memo announcing that each student enrolled in the current semester would receive KSh 180.

How did Dedan Kimathi University share Ruto's KSh 1m donation?

This decision followed a survey conducted via Google Forms, where students were asked to select how they preferred the funds to be utilised.

DeKUT offered three options for spending the money: an equal distribution among students, hosting a luncheon, or allocating it to a bursary.

With 51% of the student body voting in favour of equal distribution, the institution directed class representatives to notify their peers to collect their share from Tuesday, April 9, to Friday, April 19.

A fourth-year student studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Aron Kipsang, expressed satisfaction with receiving their portion, considering it a significant accomplishment.

According to Nation, he commended the president, emphasising that KSh 180 was substantial and could cover a student's expenses for an entire day.

"I voted for equal sharing of the money because that was a sure deal. I have received my share and for sure it is an accomplishment. KSh 180 is a lot of money for a comrade and can sort one for a whole day," said Kipsang.

Another student who voted for the same option argued that choosing a bursary alternative would have restricted the number of students, even though the funds were intended for the entire population.

Ruto donates KSh 3m to Bungoma school

Meanwhile, on February 1, during the opening of Naitiri S.A Primary School in Tongaren Constituency, the president pledged a sum of KSh 3 million for the expansion of the school.

He also lauded Safaricom Foundation for rebuilding the school that was initially built using mud.

Ruto also indicated that the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and other lawmakers would make a combined contribution of KSh 1.5 million.
