Nairobi: Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed a majority of state officers have merited from fake certificates.

Gachagua on fake academic certificates

Speaking during the National Wage Bill Conference on Wednesday, April 17, Gachagua said he will hand President William Ruto a list of state officers who have fake certificates from the backstreets of Nairobi such as River Road.

"Mr. President, I will hand you the list of those who have benefitted from the services of people from River Road, who have actually approached me to give me one. They mentioned helping many of your people acquire these certificates, they are here with you," Gachagua said.

The DP said his supporters sought his consent to alter a certificate for him during the 2022 General Election to give him an upper hand against Kithure Kindiki on the choice of a running mate.

''During the shortlisting of a running mate, Kindiki and I made to the finals, with my one degree, my supporters felt like I'm disadvantaged over Kindiki who they felt has an upper hand. They called me for a local arrangement from River Road to acquire at least one masters," he said.

In echoing Gachagua's concerns, Ruto disclosed that the audit report showed 2,100 people were in possession of fake certificates.

He directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to speed the recovery of public resources from such workers.

''An audit report has revealed we have 2,100 people so far with fake certificates working for the government. they should refund all their salaries," Ruto emphasised.

EACC calls on fake certificates

In December 2023, EACC chairperson David Oginde said their was an increase of fake certificates among Kenyans.

According to him many Kenyans with fake certificates had acquired well paying jobs in both private and public offices.
