The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has ordered owners of flooded petrol stations nationwide to temporarily shut down the premises until the rains subside.

Why EPRA ordered the closure of flooded petrol stations

EPRA noted the move would protect motorists and other consumers from contaminated oil, which damages engines.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 1, the regulator noted flood waters may damage petroleum underground storage tanks, affecting the quality of petroleum products.

"The authority wishes to caution owners of retail stations to ensure the safety of the public and the quality of their products. Any retail petrol station which has been flooded should temporarily remain closed and monitored," EPRA directed.

What's EPRA's demand from oil marketers?

EPRA asked oil marketers to take appropriate measures to mitigate against floods.

The regulator ordered petrol station operators to communicate with relevant government agencies to ensure compliance.

"The retail stations should assess the extent of the flooding, clean up any debris and ensure the quality of its products before resuming operations," EPRA added.

How govt will help businesses hit by floods

The Ministry of Trade pledged to support the businesses and industries affected by the ongoing floods that have resulted in loss of life, destruction of property, and significant economic disruption.

Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rebecca Miano expressed the government's concern and assured Kenyans that her ministry would do everything possible to assist those impacted.

The ministry opened Karibu Business Support Centres to collect information on affected businesses and provide necessary assistance.
