When Purity Njeri and Shantelle Robi Kariuki left their different homes on Sunday, April 28, they did not expect to return with full college scholarships.

Nursing scholarships in Kenya

The only thing the two did was attend gospel singer Reuben Kigame's album launch at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) in Nairobi.

In the middle of the album launch, Kigame made a random call, requesting one student who had completed high school and needed to study nursing to step to the podium.

After a little hesitation, the two teenage girls ran to the podium, making it difficult for Kigame and his team to pick one and leave the other.

Even as they ran to the pulpit, they did not know why the musician asked for a student interested in studying nursing. To their surprise, Kigame kicked off their journey to become certified nursing assistants at an international college.

"Courtesy of Reuben Kigame Foundation, we offer a full scholarship for the two students to study nursing at an international institution as part of our commitment to empower the youth to positively impact the globe," said Kigame.

He said the two beneficiaries would enrol at Steps Healthcare Training Institute, an international college with a campus at Emory Hospital in Kahawa Sukari.

TUKO.co.ke learned that Steps Homecare Services Agency, founded in Delaware, USA 2014, established Steps Healthcare Training Institute in 2023.

The institution, which is both in the USA and Kenya, was established to fill the gap in comprehensive training for nurses, whose demand was growing worldwide.

Andrew Kariuki from Steps, said that the homecare services agency leveraged its experience in providing compassionate and high-quality homecare services to comprehensively train homecare nurses.

"We are glad to partner with Reuben Kigame to provide world-class education to help the youth have a global impact," said Kariuki.

The institution is geared towards providing comprehensive training for aspiring health professionals, with a primary focus on Certified Nursing Assistants and National Council Licensure Examinations (NCLEX).

Kigame said he would raise the initial fees of at least KSh 80,000 for each of the two beneficiaries and was looking forward to working with like-minded organisations to empower more young people.

During the Asante album launch, Kigame spoke about his past life and thanked God for saving him, pledging to use his gift to serve and improve the livelihoods of others.

He attributed his transformation to salvation and urged Kenyans to stand with the victims of floods, with the death toll increasing every day.
