"I am 29 years from Nairobi and I have recurring yeast infection despite treating using antibiotics, and my husband keeps accusing me of cheating, yet I don't. Should my man treat it as well? Does cheating cause one to have recurring yeast infections? What causes yeast infections, and how should I treat them?"

Gynaecologist Dr Ignatius Kibe is an Obstetrician Gynaecologist specialising in fertility with more than 12 years of experience.

What causes yeast infections and how to treat them

A yeast infection is a fungal infection that causes irritation, discharge and intense itchiness of the female genitals — the tissues at the female genitals opening, as defined by the Mayo Clinic.

Yeast infections are common and are caused by higher estrogen levels, especially in pregnant, overusing, wearing wet underwear which have not dried well in the sun, weak immune system, wearing scented tampons or using deodorant in the female genital area.

TUKO.co.ke spoke to Kibe, who shared that yeast infections are treatable, highlighting the causes of yeast infections and warning people not to use antibiotics to treat them.

"Yeast infection is made worse by antibiotics. People should use antifungals because yeast is a fungus," he said.

The gynaecologist advised the woman seeking help to ask her partner to treat yeast infections as well.

He opined that if the lady's infection is recurring, it is possible to pass it to her partner.

He shared that if someone has different partners or the partner is cheating, it becomes a cobweb.

"All the parties should be treated," he said.
