They were lying on the road and taking alcohol while hooting and screaming, the eyewitnesses said.

The group, flapping twigs and flags, was escorting the body of a young man recently killed by a police vehicle.

"They have embarrassed us. They were doing all kinds of stunting while imbibing alcohol causing drama. Authorities should subject them to lessons on road safety and discipline," said one of the eyewitnesses.

Another group of riders in the same convoy had earlier hit a woman severely injuring her.

The accident occurred days after Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen pointed at the boda boda sector as the main contributor to road accidents in the country.

Main cause of road accidents in Kenya

He observed that efforts to tone down the accidents would begin by sorting out the boda boda sector.

According to Murkomen, between 2000 and 2008, the boda boda sector accounted for 32% of people who lost their lives, while pedestrians and passengers accounted for 38% and 26% respectively, of deaths in accidents caused by public vehicles and private cars.

He further faulted the passengers using boda boda over their ignorance of following traffic rules, including wearing helmets by both the rider and the passenger.
