"Due to severe weather and ongoing flooding in the United Arab Emirates, which has led to operational challenges, Kenya Airways cancelled its flights and is monitoring the situation," said Kenya Airways.

KQ apologised to passengers affected by the move, saying it is in close contact with the Dubai authorities to arrest the situation.

"We apologise for the inconvenience resulting from this situation. We are monitoring it in close contact with the Dubai authorities to minimise the disruptions to our customers' travels," the company noted.

The company assured customers of live updates to the development of the situation.

Why KQ flights to Dubai were cancelled

According to BBC, heavy rains experienced in the Arab country caused floods that have disrupted flights at the world's second-busiest airport.

The airport alerted passengers to keep off on Wednesday, as runways were inundated with water.

The floods submerged vehicles and some buildings, killing at least 20 people and leaving several others injured.

Other KQ-Dubai route disruptions

In December 2023, a Kenya Airways plane bound for Dubai was forced to return to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport due to tyre debris on the runway.

The debris was sighted by air traffic control before it was identified as belonging to KQ flight 310, which was en route to Dubai.

KQ flight 310's crew followed safety procedures and successfully landed the plane back in Nairobi without incident.
