A Kenyan lady who recently completed her internship as a doctor has shared her payslip, showing her KSh 200,000 gross salary before the recent government pay cut.

The lady said she completed her internship in January this year and disclosed that she earned a KSh 200,000 gross salary, which translated to KSh 139,000 net pay after taxes and deductions.

What are the functions of an intern doctor

Speaking to Citizen TV, the medic also detailed the role of intern doctors, insisting that KSh 70,000 is not a fair compensation for interns who work long hours in hospitals.

"According to the KMPDU, interns have 14 duties. They examine, take samples to the lab, and await investigations. In level five hospitals, interns are the primary doctors," she said.

Her October 2023 payslip showed that she earned a gross salary of KSh 200,000.

The government now wants intern doctors to take a pay cut of KSh 70,000, which is one of the contentious issues that led to the current doctors' strike.

"Most intern doctors earned between KSh 137,000 to 150,000 depending on whether they have the hardship allowance," she added.

This comes as the doctors' strike persists for more than a month, as the standoff between the government and medics continues.

Striking doctors advise Starehe Boys students

Recently, a video capturing a group of striking doctors in Nairobi offering unsolicited advice to students from Starehe Boys Center caused a stir on social media.

The encounter unfolded as the students were heading home for the April holidays, with the medics seizing the opportunity to engage with them.

Shared on TikTok by user @254p.i.n.c.h.e.z, the video depicts a striking medic cautioning the Starehe Boys against pursuing a career in medicine.

In the footage, the medic can be heard advising the students that they should not aspire to study medicine after high school.
