The Kenyan agricultural sector is booming with SMEs, and for some farmers, crocodile farming has emerged as a lucrative niche.

According to Kenya Wildlife Safaris, crocodile farming presents a lucrative agricultural opportunity with low failure rates due to robust support systems and a consistently high-demand market.

Is crocodile farming legal in Kenya?

The Kenyan government legally regulates crocodile farming under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013, categorising it as a form of wildlife utilisation.

To engage in this practice, farmers must adhere to specific criteria and standards set by the government and obtain permits and licenses accordingly.

Crocodile farming is one of the most lucrative business opportunities in Kenya due to the high demand for its skins.

The initial set-up costs for a crocodile farm and maintenance expenses are significant, and it may take over five years to harvest the first stocks.

Success in this venture demands expertise, patience, and confidence before reaping profits from selling crocodile meat or skins in the market.

How to rare crocodiles with borehole water

A Kenyan man on TikTok @kenyaboreholeexperts explained the various requirements for successfully establishing a crocodile farm.

In his TikTok video, the man emphasised the importance of conducting a feasibility study to assess climate, land suitability, and market demand for crocodile farming.

He also stressed the significance of site selection, highlighting the need for ample land space and access to sufficient water from a borehole to ensure it meets the requirements for sustaining crocodile farming operations.

"Conduct a feasibility study on the climate land suitability and market demand. The other thing is site selection. Make sure your borehole has enough water and the land is big enough to hold the infrastructure. Assess the water quality and quantity and ensure it can sustain crocodile farming. Also make sure the water has undergone filtration and you have enough storage to supply water to your crocodiles," said @kenyaboreholeexperts on TikTok.

Additionally, the man underscored the importance of enclosing the infrastructure of the farm entirely for security purposes.

After getting all the necessary permits, you can buy small crocodiles. They are available in South Africa, Thailand, the Philippines, Colombia, the USA, and Australia.
