The Medica Council of Kenya (MCK) has released the state of the media report for 2023/2024.

MCK conducted interviews in all 47 counties to ensure the results represented the Kenyan population aged 15 and above.

In 2023, TUKO.co.ke solidified its position as the leading news website for the third consecutive year, boasting a significant readership increase from 28% in 2022 to 33%. Following closely behind were Citizen Digital at 21% and Mpasho at 13%.

According to the MCK report seen by TUKO.co.ke:

  • TV and radio remain the primary sources of information, with 33% of respondents citing TV and 32% mentioning radio.
  • Social media accounted for 18% of mentions, consistent with previous survey results.
  • Regionally, the North Eastern and Western regions prefer radio over TV.
  • Urban residents exhibit a stronger preference for TV (83%), while rural dwellers favour radio (78%) for information and entertainment.

What are the most watched TV stations in Kenya

Citizen TV maintained its position as the top television station, capturing a substantial viewership of 35% in both 2023 and 2022.

NTV followed with 11% viewership, trailed by KTN Home with 8%.

What are most popular Radio stations in Kenya

Radio Citizen, Radio Jambo and Radio Maisha emerged as the top three radio stations among Kenyans.

Radio ownership in Kenya

In another story on TUKO.co.ke, radio ownership in Kenya has experienced a notable decline, with only 56.9% of Kenyans owning such devices in 2019, down from 74% in 2009.

Central Kenya counties, particularly Nyeri, Nyandarua, Murang'a, and Kirinyaga, stand out with the highest ownership rates.

Kenyan households in urban areas own more stand-alone radios, with 58.5% against 54.4% of rural households.
