Nairobi - The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has released the energy sector statistics for the half year in the financial year 2023/24.

According to the report the overall domestic demand for petroleum products declined by 3.01% to 2,717,699.16 m3 compared to a corresponding period in 2022.

Competition in the petroleum sector in Kenya

In Kenya, fuel prices are influenced by various factors, including landed costs, distribution costs, taxes, levies, demurrage costs, and margins earned by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

OMCs are those that sell petroleum products in Kenya, including AGO (Automotive Gas Oil, or AGO, is the name given to fuel intended for use in road vehicles (trucks, buses, vans and cars) powered by diesel engines) kerosine jet fuel lubricants and LPG.

As of December 2023, EPRA recorded 136 registered OMCs.

The three leading companies on the list, Vivo Energy Kenya Limited, TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya Plc, and Rubis Energy Kenya Plc, jointly account for 50% of the Kenyan petroleum market.

In Kenya, Shell products and services are provided by Vivo Energy, which also markets the AfriGas LPG brand.

Their large market share could be attributable to a variety of factors, including broad distribution networks, brand recognition, efficient supply chain management, and potentially competitive pricing strategies.
