Mike Sonko Unleashes Secret Videos Exposing Wanton Theft Of Millions At City Hall

Former governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is again in the spotlight after unleashing videos that exposed alleged theft at city hall during his regime as the capital's boss.

In a statement on X, Sonko revealed that some individuals whose names he never disclosed used to give him KSh 50 million as a bribe daily.

"Upon taking office as governor, the first few days, some guys were trying to bribe me with between KSh 50 million to KSh 60 million a day," he said

Sonko mentioned that his goal was always to rid Nairobi of corruption, so he reported the matter to former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Why was Nairobi County getting losses?

In a previous radio interview, Sonko revealed that Uhuru took decisive action, dispatching officers from EACC to investigate the source of the funds.

He also allegedly provided Sonko with recording devices to gather evidence.

Sonko added that he had established reasons why the county was incurring huge losses during his regime.

The reasons stated include:

• Cash gathered throughout the day by more than nine cashiers was not deposited into the bank on the same day, despite the bank's close proximity to the cash office.
• Agents were tasked with collecting cash on behalf of the county from private establishments located within the central business district (CBD).
• Receipts were manipulated to generate multiple licenses and rates clearance certificates instead of issuing a single receipt for each license payment.
• Of the 136 revenue collection channels, only 14 had been digitised.

What did Sonko do about the corruption issue?

The former county boss revealed that he decided to do something to curb corruption in the city by conducting a crackdown at the cash office at city hall.

"With the help of officers from the DCI, we managed to seize a substantial sum of money that had been hidden in the cashiers' pockets. We recovered amounts ranging from KSh 6 million to KSh 15 million from each of the around 11 cashiers working that day," he said.

He then claimed that he sealed all the loopholes abolishing cash transactions and implementing payment methods through the county's designated bank accounts.

"When there was need to spend the money already swept at CBK, we used to seek for the consent of the Controller of Budget as provided for in the County Government Finance Management Act after submitting a schedule of our intended expenditure," he said.

Was the method effective?

According to Sonko, his fight against corruption yielded fruits as the county's revenue increased to an extent that all pending bills were paid including staff salaries.

He also mentioned that the county's recurrent expenditure suddenly dropped. This progress enabled the presence of development money in the county.

Earlier, on Wednesday May 1, Sonko made startling revelations about his tenure, shedding light on the pervasive corruption he faced.

Sonko asserted that he was offered a remarkable sum of KSh 50 million in cash bribes daily from the county's revenue collection center.
