Former nominated senator Millicent Omanga is the newest owner of a Range Rover Vogue 2024.

She revealed on Saturday, May 11.

The politician proudly flaunted the car while at a city garage, uploading the photos to X (previously Twitter) account.

"My new baby. Date of birth, 2024. Ni God!" she posted.

The aesthetics and the likelihood of it being turbo-engine pointed to a pricey SUV that would cost many tens of millions of shillings.

CCP lists the model in the neighbourhood of KSh 15 million.

Omanga's display opened a floodgate of scrutiny as the observant quarters questioned the source of the millions she used to buy the car.

What did Kenyans say of Omanga's car?

The Doubting Thomases argue she has been jobless since the August 2022 elections, in which she was routed in the Nairobi woman representative race, and thus had no salary to finance the purchase.

TUKO.co.ke however understands that options such as bank financing are among the many ways to car ownership besides cash.

She was among the trending topics on Kenya's Twittersphere on Sunday, May 12.

Motor vehicle tax

But even as Omanga cruises around onboard her new ride, motor vehicle tax awaits her should the Finance Bill 2024 be enacted into law.

The government tapped on the roads to net in more money to fund its KSh 4.2 trillion budget for the 2024/25 fiscal year; motor vehicle cicurclation tax has been proposed in the bill.

Depending on factors like a vehicle's engine and model, owners will cough up between KSh 5,000 and KSh 100,000 as motor vehicle tax should the bill be adopted and become law.

The tax would be paid at the point of the motor vehicle owners acquiring their insurance covers.

Reprieve is however on ambulance owners and government and diplomatic corps, who will not be subjected to the foregoing tax.

How much does William Ruto want to raise in taxes?

The government will also be seeking to pay it self by imposing more taxes on the levies imposed on the payments it releases for tenders and supplies.

Levies on motorcycle imports and betting were not spared from the tax measures in the bill that will obviously be contentious in parliament.

Summarily, the President William Ruto-led administration seeks to raise at least KSh 2.94 trillion in taxes in the fiscal year beginning July this year and ending June 2025.
