Winnie Mbesa, a Nairobi tour operator, recently embarked on a memorable journey to experience the Lamu archipelago.

The thrillseeker told TUKO.co.ke that at the end of the voyage, she had experienced more than just a leisurely boat ride.

Sailing in Lamu is therapeutic

The experience was even more beautiful because sailor Omar Lali guided the businesswoman.

Winnie disclosed that anticipation filled the air as she boarded the traditional Mozambican dhow, leaving the bustling Shela Village behind.

"Lali is a great captain and sailor, accentuated by the fact that he embodies years of wisdom," she praised.

Winnie's passion for Lamu ignited

Armed with a bottle of Baccolo Apassimento Rosso Veneto, a rich red wine, Winnie eagerly anticipated the magic that awaited them.

With every sip of the velvety wine, Winnie felt transported to a world where time stood still.

She says Lali's stories breathed life into the ancient structures across the island, revealing the coastal gem's rich history and diverse cultures.

Winnie discloses that Lali recounted tales of seafaring traders, intrepid explorers, and great adventurers, every word igniting his passion for Lamu.

Lamu is a gem

As if under a spell, the worries of daily life faded away, replaced by a sense of tranquillity and contentment.

"Lamu is extraordinary, a true gem waiting to be explored. Beautiful beaches, rich Swahili architecture and culture, vibrant markets and narrow streets," she continued.

After breathtaking hours of sailing through stunning natural beauty, darkness started setting in, forcing them to head back ashore.

Although the journey had ended, its memories would forever be etched in Winnie's heart, and she had learned a new thing:

"Lamu is more than just a destination. It's a place where stories come to life, the past and present merge, and the sunset sail is just the beginning of a lifelong love affair with this remarkable archipelago"

That potentially explains why the tourist destination is busy, expensive, and fully booked annually.

William Ruto claims Lamu has swimming lions

A video of a joke by President William Ruto in Naivasha during the Safari Rally recently resurfaced online.

In the viral video, the head of state asked visitors interested in seeing swimming lions to visit Lamu.

Following reports that tourists were trouping to Lamu for the imaginary lions, Kenyans called him out for seemingly lying, as others said it was a joke.
