Nakuru - A cloud of grief and sorrow has engulfed Silibwet village in Nessuit following the retrieval of siblings swept away by the Ndarugu river, also known as River Njoro.

According to the area chief Douglas Mutai, the bodies of 17-year-old Faith Cheptoo and her 14-year-old sister Sharon Chepngetich were retrieved after a three-day operation.

The local administrator stated that the rescue mission was conducted by local divers who volunteered to find the minors.

Leaders present during the process urged parents and guardians to be watchful while their children are at home.

They advised them to accompany them on some errands, arguing that it was the best way of ensuring their safety.

The bodies of the siblings were taken to the Egerton University Funeral Home in Njoro, awaiting post-mortem,

The siblings were reportedly in the company of a friend when they slid and fell while trying to cross the swollen river.

Chepng'etich slipped after stepping on a slippery rock as they looked for safer rocks to cross.

They both drowned after her sister attempted to rescue her when they were overwhelmed by the water.

Njoro Officer Commanding Police Division ( OCPD) Njoro OCPD, Paul Wambugu, said the accident occurred after they tried to cross the river using the open rocks lined by villagers to cross the river.

Their friend managed to escape death by a whisker after she managed to swim through the strong currents.

The duo, Who are in grades seven and six at Tegitech Primary School, respectively, were said to be heading to the farm.

2 Maasai Mara students drown

Earlier, two students from Maasai Mara University drowned at River Enkare in Narok county while attempting to cross using a narrow bridge when the speeding waters swept them away.

The two, male and female student, were on an adventure in Ewasonyiro before they met their untimely death.

The body of Eric Mutuku, who died along with Esther Kimaiga, was found at the border of Kenya and Tanzania in Nyamira county.
