Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's call for the implementation of the "one man, one vote, one shilling" principle continues to face criticism from various leaders.

Gachagua made this statement after noting the significant population of the Mt Kenya region and the "unfair" distribution of resources.

Why did Gachagua's proposal anger coast leaders?

Speaking during the unveiling of a joint campaign and team at the UDA grassroots command center, Nyali, on Thursday, May 16, East African Legislative Assembly member Hassan Omar, urged the deputy president to abandon the proposal, citing concerns that it could incite hostility within the country.

"I want to tell the deputy president this with a lot of respect. Drop this proposal of one man one shilling. It will bring a lot of hostility to the country," said Omar.

Voicing his frustrations, Omar emphasised that he was one of those who advocated for devolution to ensure equitable resource allocation across all regions.

"If you start fighting for one man one shilling, what will happen to regions with 20 million people? This country is governed by a constitutional framework. We fought for the Constitution to ensure equality nationwide," he went on.

The ex-Mombasa senator urged leaders to uphold integrity, emphasising the importance of governing the country within the confines of the constitution.

Mungatana slams Gachagua's one man one shilling

Tana River senator Danson Mungatana also denounced Gachagua for rallying behind the one man one shilling revenue allocation principal.

Mungatana said he was disappointed at the deputy president because such a campaign would hinder developments in certain areas including Marsabit and Tana River.

He noted that Gachagua's stance on the proposal does not reflect the ruling of the UDA party.
