In a tragic incident that has shocked the South Sudan community, six people died of suffocation after being confined in a shipping container for five hours at a military base.

The government of Warrap State announced on Wednesday that it has resolved to compensate the families of the six victims with 51 cows each.

The fact-finding committee, formed by State Governor Kuol Muor Muor, reported that the deaths were due to negligence on the part of the guarding officer on duty.

The committee's investigation confirmed that the victims were left in the container without adequate ventilation, leading to their untimely deaths.

The state government's decision to provide blood compensation, a traditional form of restitution in South Sudan, aims to address the loss experienced by the families of the victims.

Why will one family not be compensated?

The compensation will be given within 21 days.

“The State government resolves to take the responsibility to pay blood compensation of fifty-one (51) cows each within twenty-one days to the families of six victims only," a statement on the Governor's social media page read.
"One person was the most wanted criminal who was sentenced to death by firing squad," the statement read on.

This move underscores the government's recognition of its responsibility in the tragic incident and its commitment to traditional practices in resolving such matters.

The announcement has been met with a mix of relief and sorrow by the community as they mourn the loss of the victims and hope for justice and accountability.
