Thika Road: Sigh Of Relief As Closed Sections Are Opened After Closure Over Floods

The Kenya National High Authority (KeNHA) has announced the opening of sections of Thika Road that were initially closed due to floods.

In a press statement released on May 1, KeNHA stated that the Thika Superhighway at the Kahawa Sukari Drift between Kahawa Barracks and Kenyatta University had been opened for Thika-bound traffic.

"The previous temporary closure due to flooding has been lifted and road users can now access this road safely," the statement read in part.

Why Thika road was closed?

KeNHA announced on Wednesday the partial closure of crucial roads within Nairobi and Kiambu counties because of heavy floods.

The authority advised motorists plying the affected routes to avoid attempting to cross flooded sections as the technical team tried to clear the way.

What other roads were affected?

The Eastern bypass was also among the roads that were closed today.

KeNHA also announced the closure of the Kamuli-Kangundo road at Joska Athi River Bridge following the heavy downpour in the country.

"You are advised to use the following alternative routes: At the Joska-Kamulu bound traffic use Joska-Koma-Kaloleni-Mua Interchange-cabanas-Ruai-Kamulu. At the Kamulu-Joska bound traffic use Kamulu-Ruai-cabanas-Mua Interchange-Kaloleni-Koma-joska," the statement read in part.

Why the Mai-Mahiu Narok highway was closed

KeNHA announced on Monday April 29, the closure of the Mai Mahiu- Narok Highway due to heavy debris deposited in the section of the road after floods struck the area.

The authority asserted that the closure would allow smooth clearance of the siltation and avoid incidents of vehicles getting stuck.
