The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Stephen Kiama has been sent on compulsory leave again, barely a month after he disregarded a similar directive from the institution's council.

The university upheld the decision it made on Friday, April 19, to send Kiama on leave.

The university's council also issued a directive requiring Ayub Njoroge Gitau to continue serving as the institution's acting vice-chancellor.

Why is Stephen Kiama being sent on leave?

According to a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, Amukowa Anagwe, the council's chairperson, said Kiama is being sent on leave due to allegations of mismanagement of the institution's resources and intimidation of staff members.

"The council wishes to inform the university community and all the concerned persons that the decision made on April 19 to grant Professor Stephen Kiama Gitahi leave with immediate effect remains in force," Anangwe said.

The council also resolved to issue new letters authorising the performance of duties in 24 administrative positions.

"All staff transfers and movements effected in response to the aforementioned court case and contrary to the council's resolution are hereby reversed and all the affected staff are directed to immediately resume their previous workstations and positions without any obstruction."

VC Stephen Kiama dismissed claims of going on leave

Kiama had rubbished the news of his leave.

In a communication shared by Kiama, he called upon the university community and students to ignore and focus on the prosperity of transforming the university to maintain a global level.

According to the memo, the university council under the chairperson Anangwe, urged Kiama to proceed on leave effective Friday, April 19.

Kiama dismissed the statement, arguing that a dean currently in office, elected by faculty members, cannot be appointed as the VC.

The council appointed Ayub Njoroge, a current dean, as the acting vice-chancellor.
