A video of newlyweds stepping on a group of women at a church in Tanzania is raising eyebrows on social media.

Why did couple step on wedding guests?

In the viral clip shared via Instagram, the newlyweds - Humphrey and Monica - walked over the women's backs soon after taking vows at the church.

The women, numbering at least 10, lay side-by-side, face down on the ground, at the church's entrance.

Humphrey and Monica were then assisted to balance as they stepped on the women's backs. Some can be seen wincing in pain as they are stepped on.

While it is unclear if the women lying on the ground were related to Humphrey or Monica, the custom is popular in the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia.

There, the relatives of the bride lay on the ground.

It is similar to the tradition of jumping the broom at weddings.

Reacting to the clip, social media users fretted at the custom, saying it was degrading despite the cultural symbolism it carries for newlyweds.

Muli Nduva:

"If I see anybody walking on my mum like that, the wedding will end.”

Wacira:

"With how my back has been feeling lately, how do I join that line-up?"

Herbert:

"If you divorce, they step on you in reverse."

Azeh:

"Thought I had seen all traditions. Now I know I’m just getting started."

Umuhuzakls:

"I dare you to get a divorce after all that."

Sally:

"I thought I had seen everything."

Xriss:

"Stepping on every ex he had."

Nissah:

"Step on us. We are your carpet."

Tam:

"Your mothers did not suffer for nine months for you to get stepped all over on by married people. Please stand up."

Why did groom wear bride's underwear?

A week ago, at another wedding, heads turned after a man wore his wife's innerwear to the ceremony.

Revealed by the wife via a video on TikTok, the man wore the purple underwear to the wedding and soon regretted the decision.

In the video, the man dressed in all-white Nigerian native attire can be seen walking uncomfortably as his wife follows closely behind while laughing uncontrollably.

It is unclear why he chose to wear the innerwear to the wedding.
