The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a cautionary alert in anticipation of substantial rainfall forecasted to lash numerous areas across the country from Sunday, May 19 to 22.

The weather forecast indicates that on the first day, rainfall exceeding 30mm and of moderate intensity will impact areas around Lake Victoria, the Rift Valley, and the Nairobi region.

Subsequently, on May 21 and 22, the precipitation is projected to escalate to 40mm within 24 hours in these regions, accompanied by forceful gusts, substantial oceanic waves in the Indian Ocean, and robust southerly winds in the eastern sector.

"It is likely to reduce in intensity on May 22 inland but intensify along the coast from May 22 to 24. Residents in all the regions are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods, and poor visibility," said the weatherman.

Meteorological department urges caution during heavy rains

Moreover, it is anticipated that water levels in rivers and oceans will remain high throughout this period.

Consequently, it is advised to exercise caution by refraining from driving through flooded areas, traversing moving waters, or open fields.

Furthermore, individuals are urged to avoid seeking shelter near window grills and trees to mitigate the risk of exposure to lightning strikes.

"People in landslide-prone areas especially over hilly areas should be vigilant. Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees, and cause structural damage. Large waves may also affect marine activities," added the statement.

Which counties will be affected by heavy rains?

According to the weather forecasts, several counties within the regions will be affected by the expected rains.

They include; Nairobi, Nakuru, Kericho, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Bomet, Samburu, Nyandarua, Busia, Migori, Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, Homa Bay, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Narok, Bungoma, and Baringo.

Others include, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana, Machakos, Kwale, Kajiado, Murang'a, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, West Pokot, Kiambu, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, and Mombasa.

Sakaja's aide pays rent to flood victims

Meanwhile, Governor Johnson Sakaja's aide paid two months' rent to eight families who were displaced by floods in South B.

Rodriques Mulindi said the families' houses were demolished following heavy rains leaving them homeless.

He also took them foodstuffs stating that he does not feel comfortable when he sees people around him suffering.
