  • The second man, 23-year-old Joseph Rotich, volunteered to retrieve the Ugandan's body for KSh 5000 at the request of nearby police but also succumbed

Two men from Mathare, Kapenguria constituency, West Pokot County, met their demise after entering into a borehole on Wednesday, May 29, at 6:00 am.

How exactly did the two men die?

The first man, a 40-year-old Ugandan, was promised KSh 200 to clean the 50-metre-deep borehole.

He was also tasked with retrieving a bucket that community members used to fetch water from the borehole.

While speaking to NTV, the residents said that Ugandans were good at digging and cleaning boreholes, as it was their source of livelihood.

"We were with the Ugandan man just moments ago taking Busaa,"one resident.

The second man, Joseph Rotich, who was 23 years old, was supposed to be paid KSh 5000 for retrieving the Ugandan man's body.

"The police who were in the vicinity asked for a volunteer who was willing to rescue the Ugandan man. That is when the second person entered the borehole. Now both are dead," another resident said.

Efforts to retrieve the bodies from the borehole are currently underway.

3-year-old boy drowns after falling into a borehole

Earlier, on April 5 residents of Bodi market, Nyakach, Kisumu County, struggled to come to terms with the tragic death of a young boy.

The 3-year-old boy was reportedly playing around the market when tragedy struck. He was in the company of his friends as they played when he accidentally fell inside the open borehole.

Upper Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Dawin Orina confirmed the incident, disclosing the boy had come to the market in the company of his mother, a trader.

Orina said it was after some time that they noticed the boy's lifeless body floating. He added that he was retrieved from the water and taken to Nyabondo Mission Hospital Mortuary, awaiting post-mortem.
