President William Ruto’s visit to Mathare had a heartwarming end when his eyes spotted a young girl selling fruits by the roadside.

In a spontaneous act of kindness, the president instructed his driver to halt the motorcade and approached the makeshift fruit stand.

Dennis Itumbi records that the head of state learned that the youngster, Nancy, was tending to the stand in her mother’s absence.

"Nancy told the president she was helping the mum who had gone to run some errand; that she was helping as she waited for schools to open," Itumbi wrote.

Moved by her diligence, Ruto purchased bananas and sugarcane from her modest selection.

Schools to reopen soon, Ruto

He also assured Nancy that the government was committed to reopening schools promptly.

He acknowledged the recent destruction caused by severe weather and pledged to repair and rebuild the affected classrooms.

"The sugarcane and bananas were distributed to the other kids who had been attracted by the president's motorcade," Itumbi added.

Ruto's compassionate interaction may have seemed simple, but it left a profound effect on the youngster Nancy and the kids who were given the fruits to eat.

About Ruto's tour in Mathare

President William Ruto toured the Mathare area to assess the damage left behind by the ongoing heavy floods.

Addressing the residents, the president announced that his government would give a stipend to each of the 40,000 households displaced by the floods.

The KSh 10,000 per household is meant to be used on looking for alternative accommodation for three months as the government seeks a lasting solution.

Ruto, accompanied by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, PS Raymond Omollo and his Housing counterpart Charles Hinga, added that the government would award the tender for 5,000 affordable housing in Kiamaiko.
