President William Ruto has called out Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over the surge of road accidents in the country.

Speaking during the launch of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024 - 2028 on April 17, at KICC, Ruto told Murkomen that he is expecting the number of accidents to have dropped during their next meeting in 2025.

"I look forward to one year from now, we will have another meeting and, in that period, Kipchumba Murkomen, you better report to us that the numbers are coming down otherwise you'll be in a lot of trouble," he said.

He added that the causes of road accidents are well known but the numbers keep increasing every year.

" Waziri and your team, know that the numbers have to come down. The template of how the numbers should come down is known, its practiced elsewhere," he added.

What Kipchumba Murkomen said about accidents

Speaking during the same event, Murkomen said that every time there is an accident, Kenyans are always looking for a Cabinet Secretary to blame.

He added that their outrage usually lasts up to a week, then once a new thing emerges, they focus on it.

"If you are outraged enough and angry enough, each one of us should do something every day to make sure that our roads are safe," he said.

He added that the greatest cause of accidents in the country is recklessness and that motorists should begin taking responsibility.

Ruto orders Murkomen to implement fines on roads

As earlier reported, Ruto issued a directive to curb the surge of road accidents in the country.

He asked Murkomen to introduce instant road fines as soon as possible.

The head of state added that the government is losing a lot of money to treat victims of road accidents and that he's certain with the support of every arm of the government, accidents in the country will reduce.
