Fatuma Kaingu, a 22-year-old, is now left with nothing but sorrow after losing her eyesight when a man she rejected poured acid on her face.

What happened to Fatuma Kaingu?

Kaingu was reported to have dated the man for a while but rejected him when he asked for her hand in marriage.

According to a report by NTV, the man, Mohamed Mwarandu Kombe, couldn't come to terms with the rejection, thus pouring acid on Kaingu's face.

"Upon rejecting him, he followed me and poured acid on my face. He then told me that I will never see again in my entire life. I regret ever meeting him," he said.

In a video, Kaingu, who covers her now-blind eyes with dark sunglasses, painfully narrated how her life drastically changed when she lost her sight after the incident.

Her mother explained that she turned into Kaingu's full-time caregiver, as she can't do anything on her own.

" I am the one to feed her, bathe her, take her to the washroom and I don't even have a job," Kaingu's mother said.

Her mother explained how her daughter's ex-lover kept pursuing her even after the tragic incident had occurred.

Is there hope for Fatuma Kaingu to see again?

All hope is not lost for Kaingu as doctors said that there is a chance she could see again after corrective surgery is done in her eyes.

However, the procedure costs KSh 450,000, money that Kaingu and her mother cannot raise on their own.

They are therefore appealing to well-wishers to help them raise the funds.

Fatuma Kaingu's ex-boyfriend arrested

A Mombasa Court sentenced Kaingu's ex-lover to 30 years in prison for the crime.

Despite the convict, Kombe, denying the accusations and claiming self-defence by stating he only splashed liquid soap on her when she attacked him with a stone, the court found his defence inconsistent and pronounced him guilty.

The verdict was reached based on medical reports showing the victim's conjunctiva was infected, red, swollen, and had a laceration on the upper lid, resulting in damage to her eyesight.
