Tahir, born to a father who had a business making pedicabs and a mother who owned a fabric shop, had no other choice but to quit medical school in Taiwan due to his father's ill health. He continued his education studying business in Singapore, and then he returned to Indonesia, where he started Bank Mayapada, one of nation's largest privately held banks nowadays.
