Helmut Sohmen graduated from the Linz Realschule (Fadingerschule) with honors, then won a Fulbright scholarship at the University of Connecticut in the United States, eventually receiving his doctorate in Vienna. Before starting his professional career, he tied the knot with Anna Pui Hing Pao, with whom he has three children. Even though not having many years of working experience, Helmut interrupted his professional activity more than once to graduate as Master of Comparative Law and a Master of Laws.
