Horst Brandstaetter accumulated his fortune as a 100% owner of Brandstätter Group, which has toy-making company Playmobil as its strongest asset. Set up in 1876 by Andreas Brandstätter as a producer of ornamental fittings and locks, the company has gone through some thorough changes over the years.

Since its inception, the Bavaria-based firm has shifted into production of metal toys like piggy banks, telephones, cash registers and scales; and in 1954 it was also making plastic toys like the Multi-Worker play-set.
