Discovery Communications Founder Lists Remote Ranch For $149 Million

John Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel, is selling his nearly 7,000 acre ranch on the border of Utah and Colorado. He has put it on the market for $149 million. The enormous property is located amongst the red rocks and canyons of the two western states. If it fetches the full $149 million, it will set a record for prices in the area. To get to West Creek Ranch you can take a helicopter ride or a 55-minute drive from Grand Junction airport.

Hendricks bought West Creek Ranch in 1995 and over the years bought additional adjacent land to put together the current nearly 7,000 acre property. In a press release announcing the listing. Hendricks said:

"West Creek Ranch is a place where the earth really opens up to tell its story. When you look up at the walls of the canyons, it's all these layers that go back 300 million years."

The property includes a 22,000 square foot main home split into four levels, all accessible via elevator. It has eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a swimming pool, chef's kitchen, home theatre, billiards room, an observatory, airstrip, airplane hangar, two helipads, and a three bedroom log cabin guest house. There's also a barn for horses and irrigated pastures for Hendricks' herd of American bison. The land is also home to elk, deer, fowls, bears, and the occasional mountain lion.

Hendricks set up 4,000 acres of the property as a permanent conservation area which can never be developed.

Hendricks is selling West Creek Ranch because he and his wife Maureen plan to spend the bulk of their time traveling, as well as working on the nearby resort they own, Gateway Canyons.
