Cody Ross was born in 1980 in Portales, New Mexico, and he was a standout baseball player at his local high school, even throwing a five-inning perfect game. The Detroit Tigers drafted Ross straight out of high school in the fourth round of the 1999 Major League Baseball draft and he began playing in the organization's farm system. Ross made his pro debut on July 4, 2003 with the Tigers. He spent one season in the majors in Detroit before he was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played from 2005 until 2006.
